Cowen Park Day 5-- FUN FRIDAY

Today we were lucky to have Jonathan Chase come speak to us. Jonathan told about some of the trials and successes he has had as a person growing up with Asperger's Syndrome. You can find more information about Jonathan by clicking on the links below
short bio here: http://www.oregonautism.com/index.php?fuseaction=about.board

Jonathan encouraged all of us to keep trying things that are uncomfortable or challenging. He felt that by just trying those things he was able to learn about himself and is a better person now -- and besides, being uncomfortable can't kill you!

After his talk we all walked down University Ave. and checked out the poster store before getting lunch and catching Harry Potter. Have a great weekend everyone. Thanks to those who did great blogging all week!

See you Monday.

Cowen park day 4

Today we used the "action steps" to complete our service learning projects. The highlight, pictured above, was when we used the steps to figure out how to move three huge logs to a more useful location. Ithink were all excited Togo to the U district tomorrow. It is certainly a well deserved Fun Friday. Tonight please tell me what A, B, C, D, E, and F stand for in the "action steps".

Cowen park day 3

Today we continued our work on perspective taking and started to talk about solutions to problems. We all agreed that a Win-Win solution is the target. For our service work today we continued our mulching work and began a new job. Our new job was to identify and remove a specific species of maple. Bonus point to anyone who can name it. Tonight please tell me the three types of statements you use to express your perspective. (I _____, I ____, and I ____).

Cowen park day 2

The entire group did a great job working despite quite a hot day by Seattle standards. Today we used role play as a way to practice perspective taking skills. We talked about perspectives as thoughts, feelings and wants. If you are sharing your thoughts, feelings, and wants you are sharing your perspective. If you can talk about another person's thoughts, feelings and wants you are "taking" their perspective.

Why is it important to know what other people are thinking, feeling or wanting?

Cowen park day 1

We welcomed a new member to the ELP group and gathered at a new location. We all appreciate the fact that we are working in a ravine in the shade where it is much cooler. Today we instigated a new blogging competition--at the end of the week, the person who answers the most blog questions gets lunch on Drew on Friday. Tonight's question: Explain the project we completed today and who was the project boss.
